A classic and super popular Pakistani/Indian dessert – gulab jamun! If you, like me, are looking for nut-free mithai, this is a great recipe for you. It’s a great make-ahead dessert.

INGREDIENTS (makes approx. 20-25 gulab jamun)
– ¾ cup whole milk powder
– ½ cup all purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 2 teaspoons ghee
– Approx. 8 tablespoons half & half cream (but may be more/less, enough to help get your dough to the right texture)
– 2 cups sugar
– 2 ½ cups water
– ¼ teaspoon kewra essence
– 3-4 cardamom pods (or 2-3 drops cardamom essence)
– Neutral oil for deep frying (e.g. vegetable oil)
– Optional: 1/16th teaspoon orange food colouring powder; silver leaf, for decoration
